A Brief History of the Isles Hotel Group

Off the West Coast of Scotland lies a group of Islands known collectively as the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The central group known as the Uists are made up of North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist and were served for years by three estate owned hotels.

In the 1970’s these hotels were not fulfilling local needs and in 1978 local businessman and entrepreneur Mr D. J. Peteranna saw an opening to develop the Borrodale Hotel in Daliburgh, South Uist, he built around the original Doctor’s house and the consulting room and dispensary walls can still be seen in the residents lounge. Over the years this has further developed and has now 14 en-suite bedrooms, 2 bars, a dining room and a lovely conservatory restaurant.

The Borrodale also operates two self catering holiday cottages in the nearby town of Lochboisdale opposite the harbour, Harbour Cottage and Calabhaigh House which are both fully equipped to cater for families or those who require more individual experience.

Fishing is available through the hotel for Sea/Brown trout and Salmon and is an ideal location for fishing in South Uist. The hotel is also ideally situated for bird watching, walking and golf at the nearby Askernish golf course.

In the early 80’s there was clearly a demand for another such development on the Uists. The obvious choice would be Benbecula where the existing Dark Island Restaurant was purchased and extended. This now provided an 11 bedroom hotel with lounge bar, public bar, restaurant, function suite and conference facilities which opened in June 1981, soon building up a reputation for being the “Best in the West”. The close proximity to the Island’s Airport in Balivanich meant the hotel became very popular with commercial travellers and in 1983 increasing demand meant that the hotel was expanded to provide another 11 bedrooms. During 1987 the hotel was further expanded with the addition of 20 more bedrooms to provide 42, all with en-suites. A sun lounge and more intimate dining room were also added.

The Dark Island Hotel, now the largest hotel on the Uists, appealed to the major coach tours operating the Island Hopper holidays. The hotel could now offer a facility for the larger weddings and functions for which there was great demand.

During the early 90’s the Dark Island Hotel was becoming very popular with the “Club” scene so the public bar was expanded to include a gaming area, disco and a large screen TV, this venture proved to be very successful and became known locally as “The Club Bar”.

The lounge bar became a quiet comfortable space for people to enjoy a peaceful drink or a meal away from the more active public bar.

By 1993 the time was right for providing more facilities for the islands. The Creagorry Hotel (famous in the Guinness Book of Records for serving the most drams in one day) came onto the market and became the obvious choice. The Creagorry hotel was originally converted from the old bank building in 1885. Once purchased the group completed extensive refurbishment and the hotel was re-launched as the Isle of Benbecula House Hotel. The hotel now provides 20 en-suite bedrooms, a conservatory restaurant and a comfortable lounge bar. In addition the public bar was transformed into a very popular locals bar which retains the name “The Creagorry Bar” as well as the ambience of the old Creagorry, famous for the live music.

With fishing rights to a number of Sea/Brown trout and Salmon lochs the hotel appeals to the discerning fisherman who requires top quality food, accommodation and fishing. The hotel also appeals to ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts.

This has added a whole new dimension to the Isles Hotel Group; look forward to the next thirty years.
